Donating Your Time & Money
Volunteer
If you lead a busy life, you may wonder why you should make time to volunteer. Most people find themselves in need at some point in their lives. If you are the person with the ability to help others today, it will make a difference in both your life and theirs.
Helping other people feels good and gives you a greater perspective of the world around you.
In addition to helping others, volunteering also can help enhance your skills, give you time to interact with others and allow you to help your community. Adding your work to the efforts of other people in your community improves the quality of life for everyone.

Why Should I donate?
The Salvation Army has been helping people in Riverside since 1892. For a 115 years community minded people, like your-self, have been donating to The Salvation Army allowing us to assist local families and individuals to get back on their feet and begin contributing to society once more.
The Salvation Army is committed to assisting all people without regard to nationality, race, belief, sexuality, ability, or judgment of behavior.
According to management expert Peter Drucker, The Salvation Army is "by far the most effective organization in the U.S." A responsible steward of the generosity of the American people, at least 83 cents of every dollar donated to The Salvation Army goes directly to assist those in need.
Today we provide a variety of emergency services to families, such as take-home food boxes, utility assistance and rent assistance.
Local Success Stories
Single Father with three children homeless
A man had worked as a stay at home
dad for 6 years while his wife worked
outside the home. His wife began
using drugs and when her problem
quickly became out of control she
abandon both him and their three
children; ages 3, 4, & 5. (Typically this
situation would be more common place for a stay at home mother, but as times
change there is an increasing number of stay at home fathers.)
Being out of the job market for 6 years and with no source of income he did not
know what he was going to do. With no one he could move in with he moved
into a low cost motel. He quickly ran out of money, but was lucky enough to
receive a few vouchers for a few more nights. When those were exhausted,
desperate and penniless he checked his three small children and himself into
the local shelter.

Rocio & Nicolas
Another program we have provided, for over 16 years, is a no-cost and low-cost preschool to over 100 children. Our second success-story is about Rocio and her son, Nicolas. Here is their story:
Nicolas began attending The Salvation Army Preschool in July of 05’. At the time Nicolas and I lived with my parents. I was working part-time and attending Riverside Community College in the evenings.
My parents began talking about moving out of state. I knew I would need to find affordable childcare, and a place to live. My mom suggested I find out more about the preschool at The Salvation Army, so I did. Nicolas started attending and it didn’t cost me anything. What a blessing that has been for us. At Longfellow Elementary School I started working in an entry-level position and have now advanced to secretary to the Vice Principal. With my advancement and pay increase, I now pay a reduced fee to the preschool, but it still is affordable for me. In the last 2 years, I was able to finish my classes at R.C.C. and transfer to Cal Baptist University. I will soon finish my Bachelors Degree and begin the teaching credential program.
I am thankful, that for the past two years, Nicolas has had the opportunity to attend the preschool. I know that he is safe there and learning what he needs to succeed as he enters Kindergarten this fall.
I am grateful to the staff at The Salvation Army. They maintain a loving and enriching environment for all the children who attend. I am a single parent and Nicolas has had no contact with his father since he was about a year old. So, I am especially grateful to his teacher, Mr. Scott, who has been a good role model for Nicolas.I will never forget the opportunity The Salvation Army has given to me and my son. I would not be where I am now, if the preschool wasn’t there for us.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,
Rocio & Nicolas
Mr. Scott
Rocio mentioned that Nicolas’ teacher, Mr. Scott, was a good role-model for her son. Here is Scott’s success story:
The Lord brought me to The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center in 1996 because of my drug and alcohol addiction. I was homeless, penniless and my children were in foster care. Shortly after my successful completion of the ARC program in 1997, I was hired by the ARC as the groundskeeper. I moved into my own apartment and was reunited with my two sons, who were about10 and 12 years old at the time. I raised them as a single parent. They are now 20 and 23 years old. My youngest son is working and going to school. My oldest son is serving on an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf.
Because of my association with The Salvation Army, I have developed a close relationship with the Lord. When I asked the Lord, what He wanted me to do, I soon realized He called me to teach.
While at the ARC, I began attending college part-time. I was told The Salvation Army had a preschool and I knew that was where I belonged.
In September of 2001, Cathy Hill, the director of the preschool, hired me as an Associate Teacher.
In 2003, I graduated from Riverside Community College with "Great Distinction" a (4.0 gpa) and an Associate Degree. That July I was promoted to Teacher and I took over my own classroom.
In 2006, I graduated from Concordia University – Cumma Sum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree. I am now working on my Master’s Degree in Education.
In August, I will be leaving the preschool, after 6 years, to student teach. In 2008 I will start a Masters Degree program in special education at Azusa Pacific University. Since I’ve been with The Salvation Army, I have had the Lords protection around me and his blessing on me. The Lord told Abraham, "I have blessed you and you shall be a blessing." The Lord has blessed me through The Salvation Army. I hope that I am found worthy to also be a blessing.
Thank you,
Mr. Scott
I hope you have been moved by these success stories from these Riverside area families.
